Supporting Inner-City Youth: Addressing Mental Health and Educational Challenges
Many kids in inner-city areas—about one in three—face problems with their mental and emotional health. They also struggle in school, especially with reading, English, and math, often not keeping up with their grade level. These issues can make students feel less interested in learning and affect how they relate to teachers and other adults.
As these challenges continue, many of these kids may feel discouraged and hopeless. This can lead to low self-esteem, causing them to act out in class and in public. Sadly, this behavior can result in serious consequences like being sent out of the classroom or even getting into trouble with the law. It’s important that we offer support and understanding to help these young people succeed.
Our Methods to Bridge the Gap!
Purpose Statement:
Many youths, teens, and their families live with chronic mental trauma due to physical, verbal and emotional abuse, death of siblings through gun violence, and the absence of primary parents from long term incarceration. Study shows that if mental and emotional trauma is ignored and left untreated, the results of that inner pain and hurt will soon negatively affect the mind and emotional health and will begin to display itself in unacceptable social behavior.
